Acquiring and mastering a foreign language are progressive processes. Constant exposure to the language through reading, studying and practicing is fundamental.

The CVA Academic Department offers a series of downloadable material intended for students who wish to adequately prepare to compete in the CVA Annual National Spelling Bee:

1.      Categories Defined: These include families of words for each category of our Spelling Bee. In order to achieve the best results in the competition, students are encouraged to thoroughly review this material.

2.      Study Guides (Spelling Rules and Practical exercises): These are practice sets with progressive levels of difficulty. Students should begin to review these exercises from the very beginning of the school year and continue reviewing periodically until they feel confident that they have mastered the spelling objective.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of this downloadable content as its constant practice and study will result in a significantly greater chance to reach the highest rankings within the competition. Participants will find fun and effective ways of learning how to master spelling in English.

Online Spelling Practice

  • Enter http://www.spellingcity.com/index.php?option=com_spellingengine&task=searchForList&Itemid=122

  • When asked  to "Enter teacher's name", type Ivette Machado and hit the "Search" button.

  • Word lists for the CVA Spelling Bee 2008 will appear onscreen arranged by category (Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4, Level 5, Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior)

  • You can access any of these lists by double clicking on each one and start your spelling practice online right away!

  • Each list will present several options:

    • "Teach Me"

      • Put on your headsets and click on the "Start Teaching" button. You will hear correct spelling for each and every word from the list. Each letter appears as it is pronounced upon completion of the whole word. In this way the student not only hears the correct pronunciation and intonation, but checks ortography, and spelling. You can request the word to be pronounced (and written) as many times as needed.

    • "Test Me"

      • Here you will have to identify the pronounced words and write them down in the appropriate box. You can request the word to be pronounced by clicking on "Say it" as many times as needed. If you wish to be more certain of a particular word you can also request to be given an example of a sentence that actually uses the word (by clicking on "Sentence").  The "Backwards" option pronounces the word backwards thus adding more complexity to the exercise.

      • Upon completion of all the words in the list and by clicking on "Check me!", the program will present you with a score and a list of those words you need to keep practising in order to improve your spelling ability and performance.

    • "Play a Game"

Word Search - This game requires a minimum of 3 words and will not be available if you have 2 words or less. This game will scramble your words into a matrix. The object is to locate and outline all of the words within the matrix.

HangMouse - Similar to Hangman, the objective is to guess the word in a set number of tries.

Unscramble - The objective of this game is to put the word back together from a scrambled set of letters.

    • "Print"

Use this option for printouts of word lists
