Constant Spelling practice in English language training programs has proven to be a useful educational tool that helps students build vocabulary while learning concepts and the correct use of the English language. It was only natural to Centro Venezolano Americano, a Binational Center founded in 1941 and one of the most recognized institutions in the teaching of English as a Foreign Language in Venezuela, to promote Spelling in all of our Programs both onsite as well as in selected schools of the Caracas Metropolitan area. In time, the need to stage a formal event where our best students could exhibit their spelling abilities in a stimulating learning-oriented environment led to the organization of our own Spelling Competition: the CVA Annual National Spelling Bee. The 1st. CVA Annual National Spelling Bee was held in 2002 with remarkable results and is now widely recognized as the first competition of its kind and scope in Venezuela ever. To date, six editions of the competition have been celebrated in Caracas congregating dozens of schools and hundreds of students from the Caracas Metropolitan area as well as from other Venezuelan cities. The CVA Annual National Spelling Bee has also set a standard in Venezuela, prompting other educational institutions to celebrate their own internal Spelling Bees and reaching the goal of widespreading the usefulness of Spelling as an educational tool with an almost unlimited potential. The purpose is still the same: to encourage as many Venezuelan EFL students as possible to improve their command of the language by way of Spelling. The vision is to make it a fully nation-wide competition among students from public and private schools all over the country. Each year we welcome all local schools (public or private) who wish to register their own participants. We also encourage students and teachers to prepare well ahead by constant Spelling practice using the wide variety of Study Resources offered in this website all year-long, free to download. The CVA Annual National Spelling Bee Set of Rules is also available for download all year long to familiarize potential participants with the competition's general structure and dynamics.
