These rules are adapted from the original Scripps National Spelling Bee, a nation-wide competition celebrated every year in the U.S.

During Preliminary Rounds (which comprise Dictation and Spelling) students' performance is ranked based on accumulative points  assigned by the Jury each time they give a correct answer. Students with the highest rankings are the ones who will go on to the Final phase.

The Final Round is organized in consecutive spelling rounds, by category. In a "Fail & Out" procedure, participants within each category are progressively eliminated until reaching verdicts for a First, Second and Third Place per category.
